Breaking the Silence: Creating a Period-Friendly World in Bamenda

On May 28th, in the heart of Bamenda, Cameroon, something extraordinary happened.

Under the powerful theme “Together for a Period-Friendly World,” a room that was meant for 20 girls swelled to welcome 28 young women between the ages of 15 and 30—proof that the need for safe, open, and empowering conversations around menstrual health is not just necessary, but urgent.

From 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, the day unfolded like a tapestry of courage, education, and sisterhood.

The event kicked off with warm smiles and breakfast—a gentle start to a day that would leave lasting impressions. The facilitators included three passionate DAU ambassadors, one skilled trainer, and two mental health specialists, all ready to pour knowledge, hope, and healing into the hearts of every girl present.

What followed was more than just a talk—it was an awakening.
The girls sat in quiet attention as discussions unfolded around gender-based violence and mental health—two topics often left in the shadows. They were encouraged to speak up, to reach out, and to know that their stories matter. They learned how to manage their mental well-being, especially in the face of trauma and societal stigma.

Then came the heart of the event: menstrual health education.
Myths were shattered. Taboos were challenged. Truths were spoken.
The girls bravely opened up about their first periods—some filled with fear, confusion, even shame. Yet, in that space, they were met not with judgment, but with understanding and empathy. Laughter and tears mingled as stories were shared, and a collective strength emerged. They learned about hygiene, tracking their cycles, and most importantly, that they are not alone.

After these emotionally charged sessions, the atmosphere was lightened with snacks and games—moments of joy to prepare for the next powerful chapter: a hands-on liquid soap and detergent production training. For four full hours, every single girl got involved—measuring, mixing, and creating. The pride on their faces was unmistakable. This wasn’t just training; it was empowerment. It was skill-building for self-reliance.

At the end of the day, they were given more than just knowledge. Each girl went home with sanitary pads, homemade soap and detergent, transport fare, and most importantly—a renewed sense of worth.

Photos captured radiant smiles. Laughter echoed as they said their goodbyes. And one truth lingered in the air long after the day ended: When girls are empowered, entire communities transform.

Despite limited resources, the event was an overwhelming success. Though we planned for 20, we reached more—because word spreads fast when something truly matters. And while we couldn’t accommodate everyone this time, we were reminded that there is a growing hunger for change.

This wasn’t just a one-day event. It was a ripple in the ocean of change.
And this is only the beginning.
